FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH Guitarist Explains ‘AfterLife’ Album Title

In a new video recap of the start of FIVE-FINGER DEATHrecently embarked on a European tour, guitarist Zoltan Bathory talked about the band’s upcoming album, “Life after death”which is due August 19. He said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): “We called this record ‘Life after death’. And ‘Life after death’, to us, means several different things. And one of them is that this is the afterlife of the pandemic. So in a way it’s a paradigm shift because this world event has changed, in my opinion, it has changed the way people think about life. You had an enforced two-year break – that’s what happened. All of a sudden, people no longer went to work all over the world. And after a few months, you start thinking, ‘Hmmm, that’s interesting. I don’t spend so much money on gasoline anymore. And then you start thinking about it. “Well, wait a second. So I used to spend money on gas that I put in the car so I could get in my car and drive to work to make money for gas in my car and for the car I bought so I could go to work. Hmmm. And then I also bought this house so I could come home and rest so that next time in the morning I could get up and go to work. I think I like it. So I think people kind of realized they were on a hamster wheel; they realized they were chasing something. They realized we might be too busy to notice, is that really life?
He continued, “If you think about it, the meaning of the afterlife, you realize that it means something completely different to almost every culture. However, whatever it means to you will dictate how you you live your life. If you are a Viking, you believe that you must go to Valhalla. The only way to go to Valhalla [is] if you die in honor in battle. So if you look at a Viking, they’re going to say, “Yeah, I gotta go into battle and I gotta die in battle because that’s my idea of the afterlife.” Now, if you opt for, say, the Buddhists. Buddhists believe that they have to become enlightened, so they meditate and go through these spiritual processes to ascend into a different spiritual plane. So most people in this area live their lives thinking, “I have to evolve spiritually. Then you come to your kind of Judeo-Christian country that has Catholics and they have this duality of heaven and hell – punishment and reward. So they are going to live their whole life by these commandments and what they can and cannot do, why they will go to heaven and why they will be punished. So, interestingly, your relationship to this idea, what happens after you die, the afterlife, will actually dictate your whole life – how you live, your moral codes and everything you do, to a certain way, will be related to it.”
