Guns N ‘Roses and Metallica Tour was once stopped by prominent politician
In 1992, a prominent politician attempted to stop the Guns N ‘Roses Metallica stadium tour. Check out the full story below.
The Guns N ‘Roses Metallica Stadium tour of 1992 would be one of the greatest tours of all time. The two bands were the biggest bands in the world at the time and it would be billed as a headlining tour rather than a first band for the other. The tour took place in the summer of 1992 in major cities in America and Canada. But a prominent politician tried to stop the tour from reaching his town and that’s what we were going to talk about in today’s video.
A 30-year-old councilor representing a neighborhood in Ottawa, Canada’s capital, strongly objected to the Metallica and Guns N ‘Roses tour coming to his city. The reason? Faith No More would open the tour with Metallica in second place and they would play for about two hours and the directing to get Guns N ‘Roses ready for their show took about 1.5-2 hours. On top of that, Guns N ‘Roses frontman Axl Rose was consistently showing up late, so the shows that were part of the tour ended up early in the morning. For Watson, he was concerned about several factors. One being the city’s curfew which went into effect at 11 p.m., the other was the fact that public transport does not run early in the morning. The concert organizers wanted to be able to play after 12:30 a.m. and the concert tour needed Council approval to get a noise waiver.
And some voters and residents backed Watson’s position and the councilor was successful in pressuring his counterparts and the mayor to vote against granting a noise waiver to the tour.
But things didn’t end there. Watson’s positions made him extremely unpopular with Guns N ‘Roses and Metallica fans and the international media quickly took notice and Watson would be interviewed on Entertainment Tonight. He would remind the Ottawa Citizen
“It was my one and only time to participate in Entertainment Tonight. There was a huge media blizzard. I got a lot of phone calls, about 700, mostly from teenagers,” he recalled. .
A morning radio DJ named Dan Halen, who hosts 54 Rock’s morning show, spent one of his shows letting angry Guns N ‘Roses and Metallica fans express their frustration to the advisor. Halen would recall to the Ottawa Citizen âOur phone lines were blocked, starting at 6 am,â Halen said at the time. âWe decided to give up the music this morning and let them express their anger. Many Guns N ‘Roses fans are 25, 35 or 40 years old. They are taxpayers, people who work, âhe said.
One fan even called Watson and I quote “padded shirt”, but the advisor steadfastly maintained his position that people attending the concert would likely drink and without public transportation there would be no proper way and safe for them to return home.
The public reaction was so great that the council members and the mayor reversed their decision and granted them a noise waiver until 12:30 a.m., but they would only allow them to play the concert under two conditions: (1) there would be a fine of $ 30,000 if the noise persists after 1 am; and number (2), everyone attending the concert had to make a donation to the Ottawa Food Bank. In the end, it didn’t matter, as the tour skipped to Ottawa.
Promoter Debra Rathwell told the Ottawa Citizen at the time why the tour skipped the nation’s capital, saying, â(Not including Ottawa) has nothing to do with the geographic location of Ottawa, the number of people living there. in the city, if they petitioned, weren’t petitioned, or if the city council said something. It’s not more complicated than that, âshe said.
The Guns N ‘Roses and Metallica tour would play two Canadian dates, one in Toronto and the other in Montreal, where, as you know, a riot would break out after Guns N’ Roses cut their set just 45 minutes later. leader Axl. Rose complained of vocal problems.
But in 2017, Guns N ‘Roses returned to Ottawa as part of the Not IN This Lifetime tour and Watson was at this point the city’s mayor. The citizen caught up with him and asked him if he planned to attend, which he said
âNo, I’m not a heavy metal fan, I’ll let others enjoy it.
âThey did not ask for an exemption. We are getting older, so are Guns N ‘Roses. he would point out. It does it for today’s video guys. Thank you for watching.
