Last month, the internationally acclaimed Belgian artist, writer, performer, producer, designer and director released his critically acclaimed third studio album “Multitude”. The album has been praised by The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, NPR and countless other respected publications. The twelve-track masterpiece was composed by Stromae, produced by his creative label Mosaert, and includes recent singles “Santé”, “L’enfer” and his most recent offering “Son De Joie”.
Ahead of his highly anticipated Coachella appearances on Saturday, April 16 and 23, Stromae will perform live on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! this month.
Multitude’ comes after a period of enforced hiatus from the stage. With him, forced leave and its good sides: settling down, leading a more relaxed, more structured life, closer to his family, giving pleasure to work, broadening his sources of inspiration and above all valuing what he has lived by reinvesting the dividends of this difficult phase in the heart of new songs.
Far from any egocentric self-pity, Stromae used this period to identify more closely with others, putting himself in the shoes of other people’s characters. The unstable men in La Solassitude and Mon Amour, the son of a prostitute in Fils de Joie, the depressive and suicidal protagonists in Mauvaise Journée and L’Enfer, the mismatched couple in Pas Vraiment, the invisible ones in Santé, the suffering women in Declaration; he embraces them all with benevolence and altruism, offering each a touching portrait. In doing so, he gives the title “Multitude” a deep resonance, the same that Walt Whitman conveys in his poem, whose opening Stromae could take up: “I am large, I contains multitude, I am of all hue and caste , of any rank and religion. »
“Multitude” is a window on the world, on men, and a rare moment of communion and pleasure to share. An alchemy of opposites, shaped by the desire to bear witness without judgment or contempt to the human condition in all its diversity, and the desire to explore the lives of others, sometimes one’s own (Que du bonheur sur la paternité, Invaincu sur healing) “Multitude” is the other way for Stromae to explore the world, while remaining firmly attached to its roots.
