VOIVOD – More details revealed for a monumental tribute to the late guitarist DENIS “PIGGY” D’AMOUR; Ambassadors include members of ENSLAVED, KREATOR, NAPALM DEATH, POSSESSED, ARCH ENEMY, etc.
Further details have been revealed for the Kickstarter campaign launched to erect a statue of Canadian progressive metal sci-fi innovators Voivod founding guitarist Denis “Piggy” D’Amour in Jonquière, Quebec, the hometown of the band.
In order to pay the ultimate tribute to one of the most original metal guitarists in history, three friends: a visual artist, a musician and a metal journalist come together to create this amazing project: a statue for commemorate the talent of Denis “Piggy” D’Amour.
Fred Laforge, a well-known visual artist in the province of Quebec offers a sculpture, a sci-fi statue of Denis d’Amour, aka Piggy. Using the technique of strata/strata (or layers), it is the same technique used by the artist to create the sculpture of Joe Malone (of the Quebec Bulldogs hockey team), which is erected at the Place Jean-Beliveau in Quebec.
The artist really enjoys disfiguring and distorting his subjects. He is totally into the optical side of the arts and it is with this vision of things that he created the model for the sculpture. Away and Snake, original members of Voïvod, visited the artist in his studio to understand Laforge’s vision.
“I find it rather science fiction. At first glance, I found it amazing, that’s for sure! It’s quite incredible on a technical level to see how well modeled it is. – Michel “Away” Langevin.
“His posture represents a kind of inner well-being that emanates from his music and that’s exactly what I see.” -Denis “Serpent” Belanger.
You can watch the video below:
In order to be able to launch the project properly, the trio launched a Kickstarter campaign, with the help of some well-known “ambassadors” from the metal world and beyond. People who pay a donation will have the opportunity to be part of Voivod’s history by having their name engraved on one of the strata (or layers) of aluminum used to create the sculpture. It’s a way to be part of the project, for eternity.
They invite all metalheads, Voivodeans and all fans of public art to participate, in one way or another, in this project by donating to the Kickstarter campaign. The Piggy Monument team wants to realize this project and be able to pay tribute to this incredible guitarist who has inspired many other musicians.
The last stage of this project will be the unveiling of the sculpture in Jonquière (Saguenay), cradle of the Voïvode, in 2023.
