Submitted by San Juan Community Theater
Alpha Yaya Diallo will give a live concert on Friday July 29. Diallo, originally from Guinea, West Africa, is a talented guitarist and singer-songwriter based in Canada. He has earned a reputation as an incredible musician, with a vibrant energy on stage using the dexterity of acoustic and electric guitar. Discovered in the late 1980s by Peter Gabriel’s record company, Diallo won three JUNO Awards (the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy Award). SOCAN’s Words and Music magazine described his music as “…intoxicating…infused with the rhythms of his homeland.” Diallo also offers a FREE workshop for musicians of all levels. In this workshop, Diallo will share techniques on how to play “Mandingo blues” and insight into a guitar playing method taken from the Kora, a traditional West African instrument. Students are encouraged to bring a guitar. This project has received support from the Washington State Arts Commission, WESTAF (the Western States Arts Federation) and the National Endowment for the Arts. Tickets are $30 for adults and $15 for students and youth. To purchase tickets or to register for the free workshop, visit www.sjctheatre.org or call 360-378-3210.
